Have you noticed the rise in popularity over the last couple of years of alternative relationships?
Alternative relationships can cover a lot of territory. I guess another common phrase for them would be non-traditional relationships.

I’m talking about something besides a steady dating partner or spouse. The type of arrangement that used to be almost unheard of but is now becoming common.
Just look at the popularity of “Backpage-like” sites and other non-traditional dating sites; that is social proof of the phenomenon.
What Are Alternative Relationships?
A few examples would be:
- Casual Dating
This type of non-traditional relationship is usually just a date between two people who see each other somewhat regularly.

They may have an on-going relationship but it is not exclusive. Often times, these are people who met during a “one-time” hookup, then they decided to have repeat casual dating encounters.

Sometimes they might decide to see each other again. They can enter into something like a casual dating relationship.

Having a friend with benefits can be a pretty sweet arrangement, but it can be hard to maintain. It can get messy too so it helps to follow a set of rules – like these.

This is kind of a cross between casual dating and friends with benefits. - This kind of arrangement is mainly about the sex but it might also include just having someone to do something with.

Even though there is a relationship there, it is non-exclusive. Normally in no strings dating, there are no obligations between the partners aside from the time spent together.

The Popularity Of Alternative Dating:
Even though there are many more types of alternative relationships; those are the four main types. And they are fast gaining in popularity today among guys and among women looking for men.
More and more people are deciding that they just don’t have time or need for a more traditional dating arrangement.
They might be busy with school or building a career.
They might be single parents and not ready to bring someone else into that dynamic. Or maybe they are older women who just got out of a long term relationship and they just aren’t ready for another one.
The common factor is that even though they don’t want a steady partner; they still want someone to do some things with. It’s not always just about sex and intimacy, but it often is.
Just a few years ago being able to find someone for such an arrangement was pretty hard. Society had certain rules and there was a negative perception of any kind of dating relationship that wasn’t “normal”.
However, people have changed, their needs and wants have changed. Relationships have changed and society is changing right along with all of that.
Today, alternative relationships are becoming more common. More so among certain age groups than the old-style variety.
But Who Seeks Alternative Arrangements?
Surprisingly to me, the popularity of alternative dating arrangements and online resources like matchmaking and dating sites is growing fastest among older adults.
The fastest growth is among people in the 50+ age group.
Behind them, the 20 – 30 year old people are most likely to opt out of a conventional relationship in favor of an alternative relationship.
Fortunately, finding like-minded people who want the same kind of dating situation that you do has become pretty easy.
How Can They Be Found?
Here are a few suggestions for finding a partner, no matter what kind of alternative relationship you want:
- Check your local newspaper for personals ads – there’s a good chance you’ll find others in your area looking for the same thing that you are.
spacer - See if your town has speed dating events – that’s a great way to meet several people in a single day and quickly find out what they are searching for.
spacer - Look into matchmaking sites like Match dot com or e-Harmony – not everyone using those sites is looking for a life partner.
spacer - Web-based personals ads like Craigslist or Craigslist-like personals alternatives are available everywhere – just be careful and use them with a healthy dose of skepticism – not everyone is who or what they claim to be.
spacer - Use online dating and hookup sites – these can be down and dirty and searchable according to the kind of people you want to meet. If it’s just all about the sex, or the best way to get laid; this is your easy button.
Is It Just About Sex?
So maybe you just need someone to accompany you to the office Christmas party.
Maybe you like to go to plays or movies but hate to go alone. Or maybe you need an occasional partner for sex and just don’t want the responsibilities of a long term, steady partner.
Consequently, alternative relationships may well be the answer to your needs.
No matter what your wants and needs happen to be at this point in time, you have options for finding the perfect partner, and the perfect solution.

I’m using WordPress. I’ve considered changing over to Joomla or Drupal, but the advantages of WordPress still seem better to me. Drupal also seems to be better suited to people with a higher level of coding knowledge than I have.
I’m a big fan of WordPress because of the simplicity and the many plugins that make it easy to add various functionalities.
